Totonho, born Antonio de Araujo Pereira in 1958, is a self-taught artist from

Salvador, Bahia in northeastern Brazil. Born in the countryside, he started

painting at a very early age, using natural materials like soil, plants, and

coffee to create his pigments.

About 14 years old, he relocated to Salvador, the vibrant capital of Bahia.

There he refined his artistic skills, and connected with other artists. In the

1980s he became a founding member of the Associação dos Artistas

Populares do Centro Histórico de Salvador.

Totonho had his first exhibition in Brazil in 1973 and debuted internationally

in Spain in 1988. Since then, his work has been featured in numerous solo

and group exhibitions, both domestically and abroad.

With his distinctive use of color and his extraordinary reflections, Totonho

captures the mysterious Brazilian landscape in an inimitable way. There lies

the essence of his worldwide success, with exhibitions in Portugal, France,

Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, The

Netherlands, Canada and the US. Additionally, Totonho has conducted

workshops for children, focusing on the importance of nature, and self-

expression through visual creativity.
